SEAWORLD CALIFORNIA EXTERNSHIP CURRICULUM


Week One:
Day 1 Park Day: Visit all exhibits and shows in the park, and write a short critique on each area, to be due the next morning.
Day 2 Behind the Scenes: Spend the day with an Animal Care Supervisor visiting all behind-the-scenes areas.
Day 3 Fish House and Pinniped Exhibit: Food preparation, cleaning, observations and feedings.
Day 4 Avian Center (early shift): Food preparation; feeding and basic husbandry (marine birds, waterfowl and psittacines); cleaning and exhibit maintenance.
Day 5 Avian Center (Humboldt shift): Food preparation, feeding and husbandry of Humboldt penguin exhibit.

Week Two:
Day 1 Freshwater Aquarium and Other General Aquaria: Animal husbandry and feeding; filtration and maintenance; life support systems; necropsy and animal transport as needed.
Day 2 Marine Aquarium and Shark: Animal husbandry and feeding; system filtration and maintenance; life support systems.
Day 3 Polar (early shift): Water samples; animal husbandry and observation; feeding (alcid & polar); cleaning and exhibit maintenance; snow blowing.
Day 4 Polar (middle shift): Animal husbandry and observation; feeding (all areas); exhibit maintenance; mechanical checks.
Day 5 Polar (late shift): Feeding (temperate penguin and chicks); cleaning and exhibit maintenance.

Week Three:
Days
1-2
Beached Animal, Sea Otter and Cetacean Care: Animal observation; feeding; cleaning and disinfecting exhibits and holding areas; animal examination, medications and transport as needed.
Day 3 Manatee: Feeding, water quality, and cleaning.
Day 4 Animal Training: Observational tour of all training areas with a senior training staff member.
Day 5 Wild Arctic: Arctic species husbandry and training, with emphasis on animal observations, food preparation, and exhibit maintenance and enrichment.

Week Four (optional):
 

Agenda to be written by the extern, with curatorial and veterinary approval, for further concentration in areas of interest. This week may be used for further time in husbandry areas or special projects.

Note - The student may be summoned at any time for non-scheduled veterinary procedures. The student is given the opportunity, but is not obligated, to assist with procedures occurring during evening and weekend hours.
